Chapter 36 - She knew that she was in trouble

Not long after she joined the company, Kai Xin realized that the girls were apprehensive towards her. Some of them were openly showing their disdains towards her.

However, Kai Xin ignored them as they were unable to do anything to her.

Her position at the office was different from theirs. Even though she had to report to the Head of the Legal Department, Mrs. Smith, she was considered to be at a special rank.

As the only two females in the Legal Department, they were both respectful towards each other. Mrs. Smith has been working there for 5 years and when she was promoted to her current role, there were some lingering resentment.

The men in the team were unhappy as the President had skipped over the senior members who had been working there for a longer period of time. Since the promotion, they had tried to make her life miserable but she stayed put.

She had heard of Kai Xin, in passing before.

Before the famous Layla Rong left the country, she had brought her to the Annual Gathering for Lawyers and introduced the young girl as her young protege. However, when she migrated overseas, everyone gradually forgot about the young girl.

Mrs. Smith looked at the woman before her. She was confused by Kai Xin's actions. She was obviously a serious and capable person, yet when she was dealing with the men in the office, she acted like a weakling who needed help with everything. It was baffling to say the least.

"Mrs. Smith?" Kai Xin called out when she noticed that the woman was staring at her.

Mrs Smith cleared her throat and indicated for her to continue.

"So, as I was saying," Kai Xin pointed at the document in front of Mrs. Smith, "We should amend the clauses here to make it more balance."

The older woman looked at the clauses that Kai Xin pointed out, and those were the same clauses proposed by her team that she had thought of amending as well.

The clauses were too unfair and the owner of IT Limited would definitely reject it.

They had spent too much time and money trying to convince the owner of IT Limited to go through with the acquisition. If the acquisition fell through because of this, President Du and President Shenlong would be really disappointed at her.

No doubt this was the backhanded action of the senior member of her team to jeopardize her career.

Everyone knew that President Du was a man who respected fairness. If she was to present this blatantly unfair contract to him, he would have thrown it back into her face.

The fact that Kai Xin was able to see through the convoluted clauses in less than 5 minutes of studying the contract meant that highly experienced President Du would be able to easily see it as well.

Sighing at the action of her teammates, Mrs. Smith kept her anger contained.

With regards to Kai Xin's suggestions, Mrs. Smith agreed to change the clauses and they both exchanged ideas on how to make it fairer.

They spent the next few hours discussing on the terms of the contract and how best to plan for an easier integration and acquisition without sacrificing the poor employees of IT Ltd.

By the time they were done, it was already night time and saved for some who were rushing through their work, the office was almost completely dark.

On her way out, Mrs. Smith stopped by Kai Xin's desk and asked, "Would you like to go for a dinner with me?"

Kai Xin looked at the clock. It was already 8pm but she was not hungry yet, so she merely thanked her and told her that she had work to do.

"Work? Didn't you pass your files back to the firm? Were you being bullied here?" She asked because she was informed earlier that Kai Xin would be handling only the M&A with regards to IT Limited.

Her workload should not be this heavy that she had to stay until so late.

"No, it was not like that!" Kai Xin laughed at the well-meaning self-appointed office mum.

To reassure her, she explained, "I was uncomfortable with passing some of the cases that I was handling to my colleagues at the firm. After all, some of my clients chose the firm because of me."

She was merely stating as a matter of fact. Due to the quality of her work and the fact that she often helped to fight for the underdogs, she was highly sought after by those who cannot afford legal fees.

Mrs. Smith was impressed with her sense of responsibility. "Alright then. I won't force you. Don't stay up too late. Nothing is worth more than your health."

Kai Xin nodded, and after sending Mrs. Smith to the lift, she went back to her files and continued working.

After she told Han Ye about the annoyance of having to go to and fro the firm everyday, Han Ye had prepared a state of the art safe for her to keep the files from the firm. This way, she can work on her files whenever she had the time.

She worked on it for another hour before DX finally came out of his room. Since she was in a meeting earlier, he decided to take a short nap while waiting for her. When he woke up and saw the time and that she was still working, he sighed in frustration.

"This woman..."

She was so engrossed in her work that she did not noticed that he was standing behind her for more than 10 minutes.

Annoyed by her lack of awareness, he finally cleared his throat to get her attention. The moment she saw his darkened face, she knew that she was in big trouble.
