There were a lot of cultivators that use clothes with imbued spiritual energy but not many could come back with an intact soul. If they got possessed, the weaker soul a.k.a the one with lower cultivation power would suffer.
The weaker soul would be replaced by the possessing soul and would be the stray soul living in the continent. This way there was a lot of souls successfully possessing a body and then could leave the continent using that body they possessed.
