Lola remained silent. A whole minute passed but she had not said a word. She only kept dangling her legs in front of the chair like she had not heard a word.
A second minute passed, and Mrs. Bai and Doctor Pierre exchanged looks. Doctor Pierre gave the latter a reassuring look, perhaps the girl simply had a slow reaction. Several more agonizing minutes passed. Doctor Pierre was wondering whether she should be concerned when Lola finally spoke. "Oh."
It was just one word. Although she only uttered one emotionless syllable, Doctor Pierre felt her eyes water beneath her rectangular glasses. She blinked rapidly to stop the tears and did not utter a single word, letting Lola take in the news first.
