Chereads / The Great and Lonely: Kai / Chapter 4 - normal land

Chapter 4 - normal land

IT IS A MINUTE PAST ONE AT MIDNIGHT when the four young men arrive at their destination.

"We are here." J – the one in charge of their undertaking tonight says, staring at the small apartment they have just stopped their car in front of.

J previously called the two men seated at the back of the car, 'cool guys' and that word put them in an awkward position; making the whole ride quiet, only for them to speak once they arrive.

"This is it?" One of the two 'cool guys' J brought on this quest, asks as he pulls out his laptop from his bag, turning it on.

"Yes, this is it."

"I'm going in." Kai doesn't waste time in getting out of the car but unfortunately, one of the three men happens to be a hard person to work with.

He pulls Kai back into the passenger seat. J's eyes go wide, encountering the forbidden action and knowing he is going to hear a mouthful from Kai later on.

"You're not going anywhere; you are staying in the car. I'll be the only person going in." The 'cool guy' known as Tim says, ignorant of the angry state he has put his partner into. Tim begins retying his shoes as he stares keenly at the small apartment, calculating his journey in and out.

Kai on the other hand, continues staring grimly at Tim, imagining the worst and deadly scenarios in his head.

"Just ignore him." J whispers in a nervous voice, brushing his hands through his curly brown hair with shaky hands.

The whole street is completely dark with no street lamps located around- giving it the perfect atmosphere for their special task tonight.

"So Mason? Any electronic locks?" Tim turns his head to the tech 'cool guy' on his right, typing away on his computer.

"Judging by what I am seeing here," Mason raises his head up to look at the apartment, "It's all clean— no electronic locks."

They are four seated calmly in the car; J at the driver's seat, Kai seated beside him in the passenger seat and the two 'cool guys' at the back seat- Tim and Mason.

"Perfect. Makes it easier." Tim reaches for the car door, "I'm going—"

Kai cuts in, "Are you sure she is asleep?"

J squints at the house, "Yes, I'm sure. There are no lights turned on so she must be sleeping." Then he frowns, "Why? Do you see anything wrong? Is someone around the house?" J asks, getting curious.

Kai looks away.

The street is empty, dark and lonely; there are no lights turned on in the apartment; everything is working fine along with tonight's undertaking -which is to rob that peaceful apartment. The four of them plan to steal something very precious from the young lady's apartment and they are ready to do it as quickly as possible in order not to get caught.

"Well, there is—"

Tim cuts him off.

"Who the hell is he even, J?" Tim asks at the top of his lungs, "What is he doing here?"

Kai who is  known for his bad anger issues makes J more nervous about the poor people combination he has made tonight. Tim and Kai would not fit in the same room.

"Tim, just ignore everything else. We came here for business." J sounds like the mature person he is not.

"Yeah, exactly. I don't like some unknown bastard coming to interrupt my business."

Kai clenches his fist which makes J's chest tighten upon seeing the action.

"For all we know, he could be a cop coming undercover to burst us, don't be stupid and let just anyone in, J." Tim continues complaining.

Twenty minutes earlier, they were just three; Tim, Mason and J planned to steal from the apartment without any flops or mistakes; they planned a clean and perfect sweep-up but unexpectedly, someone came in to change their plans.

"You know how the Police in this town are, they can't catch us." J says.

"But I really hate the look of this damn guy." One can hear the pure disgust in Tim's voice. "Who even wears sunglasses at this time of the night? Is he blind? or Is he just dumb to see that it's dark out?"

Kai, with shades on is ready to connect his fist with the 'cool guy' but J quickly grabs his hand.

"Tim, enough! It's business! All you have to do is go in, get the toaster and come back out." J warns.

A toaster is what these four men desperately need.

Being around the age group of 20-23, midnight bread is something they crave for and the only way they can get it is to break into a college girl's apartment—where there's usually a massive supply of food—steal her bread and toaster; that's far better than spending money in the market.

However, one of the four men has other intentions for tonight which has nothing to do with a toasting machine.

Tim sighs with an eye roll, letting out profanities before getting out of the car.

The atmosphere is tense for a few seconds with the three of them left in car. J starts to worry about the quest becoming a total flop by the end of the night. He and Mason are to stand guard; watch what happens outside of the apartment and make sure no neighbor goes in while it is being robbed. While Tim and Kai are to be the ones performing the robbery. From the look of things, they may not be able to get their toaster tonight.

"I'm going too." Kai gets out of the car, turning Tim's complains to deaf ears.

Mason, being the real cool-headed guy of the night, ignores them all as he stares at his computer.

Once outside of the car, they both can feel how cold the community is; different from the busy city where they are coming from. It only makes sense; there are less people, less cars and industries here and more trees than the city which is more than 7 miles away.

"What are you doing man?" Tim groans, seeing him come out of the red car after him.

"For a young man with baby blonde hair and a height of 172 cm, he sure is troublesome." Kai murmurs under his breath.

"Get back in the car," he says to Kai then turns to J, "this was never what we agreed on, J! He wasn't part of the plan, he just showed up out of nowhere." He yells at their driver.

J pokes his head out of the car window, "Tim, just do the job whether he follows you in or not."

"No, I cannot work with this piece of—"

Kai begins moving towards the small apartment.

"—Hey! Where are you going? Get back in the car." Tim yells after him, disturbing the lonely and quiet neighborhood.

"Shhh Tim, you're too loud, you would drag attention." J tries to silence him but he only glares back.

"If we get screwed because of him, you owe me a brand new toaster." Tim says to J.

Once they reach the door of the apartment, neither of them exchange words but their body language speaks that they are highly irritated by the others' presence.

Sending two thieves who don't get along to steal from an apartment owned by a college girl can end in so many ways, and it chooses to end in a gruesome way.

Especially when one of the four young men isn't human.
