When the butler left, Robert paced his study. He needed to control Matthew with the help of her daughter. However, he couldn't do it if Matthew won't act accordingly. In his end, Lilly would be easy to handle. She has been a daddy's girl since she was young.
He loves his daughter dearly and he wants the best for her. Matthew Grayson is the best for her. But most especially the best for his plans.
He heaved a deep sigh and returned to his desk. He had some people to call. The business was back to normal, thanks to the money that Gray Empire had invested in his company the moment Matthew and Lilly signed their marriage contract.
He got lucky that Lucas was hellbent on making sure that Matthew got married before assuming the CEO position in one of the Gray Empire businesses. It wasn't difficult to talk to him about his daughter being Matthew's wife. He was lucky indeed. If only Matthew would be as easy to handle as his father, he would not have a problem.
He was still in deep thoughts when his personal phone rang. He was expecting the call, thus, he let it ring for a few more before answering it.
"Matthew," he said in a somber tone.
"Robert," Matthew returned the serious tone of his father-in-law.
Robert clenched his jaw. He doesn't like the tone of voice Matthew is using with him.
"Are you aware that your wife came back home?"
"Yes. She informed me that she was staying the night," he answered nonchalantly. When he received the call from the Morgan's butler, he knew that Robert would give him a problem. He had no issue whatsoever with Lilly staying at her parent's house.
"Matthew, Lilly needs your guidance. You can't just let her do whatever she wants just because she's annoyed at you."
"Lilly wasn't annoyed just at me. She was annoyed at both of us."
Robert laughed. "Matthew, Lilly is my daughter. She won't be angry at me but she will be angry at you. Come and take her home and you two can talk. It is best to talk about the problem as soon as it arises than to leave it because it will be more difficult to talk about it later on."
Matthew went quiet on the other end of the line. He doesn't really like his father-in-law but he has a point.
"I'll come and pick her up. My apologies for my wife's—"
"She was my daughter before she became your wife. She is always welcome at my house, however, I don't want this to become an occurring matter. You understand me, Matthew?"
"Yes, Father."
Robert smirked inwardly and cut the call. Things may not be so difficult after all.
His glee didn't last long because the door of his study flew open and Lilly appeared like an unexpected storm.
"Dad!" She whined. "Mom is being annoying."
"What is it this time?" He blew an air of frustration. "You just came home and you already fought with your mother?"
"I asked her for help with Matthew but she said she couldn't because she and Matthew were not close! Which was a big fat lie!" She pursed her lips and dropped herself on the couch. "I saw her in Matthew's office before."
Robert's jaw slacked as disbelief and rage flashed alternatively on his face. It was a good thing that Lilly had her back on him and she didn't see the fury in his eyes because if she would see them, he would have a hard time explaining his anger to her.
"Your mother went to Matthew's office?" He asked in a neutral tone of voice, the exact opposite of what he was feeling.
"Yes! When I still had to go to Matthew's office to get my allowance from him, I saw Mom come out of his office. I asked Matthew about it but he blatantly lied on my face and now…" She threw her hands in the air in frustration. "I asked Mom about it and she lied to me as well!"
Robert lowered his gaze to the documents lying on top of his desk, hearing what his daughter was saying was enough for his anger to flare up. If he wasn't worried about Lilly knowing things that were happening in the house behind her back, he would stride out of his office and find his wife to pull an answer from her and it wouldn't be pretty.
He didn't hear anything about his wife going to Matthew's office in the past. He knew everything that his wife was doing. He made sure of that! And not only that she was able to get away from the eyes that were watching her, but she also had the audacity to lie to their daughter!
He opened the top drawer of his desk and pulled out a stress ball. Squeezing the rubber ball in his hand, his mind was racing with possibilities. Possibilities that he doesn't like. Not only that she lied, but Matthew also lied as well. Does it mean that the two had already an understanding that he didn't know about?
He wished Matthew would come sooner to pick up Lilly for he couldn't wait to get his hands on his wife to get his answer. And unlike what she did with their daughter, he would make sure that she could not lie.
"Dad?"
"Huh?!" He lifted his eyes away from the innocent pile of papers that he had been staring at murderously. "You saying something, sweetheart?"
"I was asking if you said something to Matthew because he sent me a message, saying I should get ready because he will pick me up?" She twisted her body to face her father, with her arm resting on the headrest of the couch. She was calling her father but he just stared at the papers on his desk, brows furrowed deeply.
"Yes, I called him to pick you up."
"Dad!" She got up from the couch, ready to throw a tantrum but she saw the darkened expressions on her father's face that she decided not to.
