The melody filled the room, and Dante slid his left foot forward, and Rose's right foot slid moved, following his lead, gliding gracefully across the room and back. She began to relax and let her body sway with the tempo of the music. Rose felt a sense of freedom as Dante whirled her about the floor. She even smiled gracefully at her father while they danced. The music soon ended, and they bowed to one another as new song began.
As the night progressed, there was gaiety and laughter all around the enormous space. Guests started to dance and mingle with each other in the ballroom. It was filled with voices of men and women enjoying themselves. Rose was asked by many men to be on her dance card. She danced with a young cadet from the naval academy, and she didn't hear a word he said.
