Rose's laughter was contagious. Christopher liked the sound of it since she didn't do it often. Whatever semblance of emotion she offered him, he would take.
"I can't believe you walked out there without shoes." He stared down at her bare feet. They were both ice cold, and their bottoms were bluish-purple. "Do they hurt?"
Rose shook her head, "No."
Christopher smirked at Rose and placed her tiny feet in the basin of warm water. "From now on, wear your shoes," The Lord admonished sternly.
A single knock on the bedroom door alerted Christopher that Duncan had returned with the refreshment Rose had requested.
"Come in, Duncan," The Lord called to the man on the other side of the door.
A wooden trolley was set up with a chocolate pot and miniature cups when the butler entered. Rose spotted a special treat on the cart: it was gingersnaps.
