The lodge was silent. Christopher had Lucy, the maid, show Kane and Sir Bryson to their rooms. When he had finished taking care of the guests and checking the horses, he wandered to his office. There was still a light coming from under the door in the study. Chris checked the doorknob and found it was open. He pushed on the door, and it creaked slightly as he entered the room.
The desk sat alone and still, the air around it void of any noise. His gaze drifted around the room until it finally settled on Rose. She was fast asleep, her head drooping onto her chest. The book she had been reading was still open in her lap. Deep in sleep, Rose was gone to the world.
