"Wait, you can get to my room by—"
David shushed me and laid his lips to my ear. "There is nothing between us and the rooms we pass by—they will hear voices if they're close to the wall, just as you heard me in that alcove."
I remembered that—his voice had been muffled, but discernible. I nodded and clung tighter as he carried me on light feet down the dark hallway just barely wide enough for him to hold me this way. My skirts brushed against the wall several times.
"I'll have to take you to your room, there is no link with the healer's quarters that won't have someone nearby," he breathed into my ear, his lips brushing the shell of it and making me shiver. But I just nodded, scrambling mentally—I'd say we were tired and I'd forgotten where I was supposed to be.
They'd buy that, right?
