Emory's pretty lips thinned. She looked back at the door again, but something about the yearning in her eyes now felt more like she wished she could go out of it. Because she didn't want to answer me, or because she was scared? It was impossible to tell. She was impossible to read, and that's what was so frustrating about her.
I could usually tell when someone was lying to me.

Emory she took a deep breath and when our eyes caught, the strong, sassy woman I'd first met was there—without the kick of joy.
