It took her a couple of minutes to excuse herself from her conversation, but Lizbeth did join us with a gentle smile and a nod at Emory.

"How are you both?" I hadn't missed that Lizbeth was a little intimidated by Emory—was it still the sorcery thing? But they were also both getting more used to being around each other, and when Lizbeth forgot her fear, she was surprisingly subversive in her humor.

She rarely forgot it, though.

"We were just talking about who we'd been assigned for tomorrow," I said with a glance at Emory. "And Emory said some of the men are… unpleasant. I just thought we should, you know, remember our signals. In case one of us needs saving."

Emory's brows popped up. "Signals? For what?"

"Assholes," I said bluntly.

"Forward gentlemen," Lizbeth said at the same time.

Emory snorted. "So, share the signals please—and what are we supposed to do with them?"
