I waited a long time, watching that room, making sure no one was there. Listening for voices, but there was nothing.
It was late—we'd eaten dinner late, then I'd been at a loss. Then I'd messed around letting Abigail think I was tired and wanted to sleep, then I'd waited to make sure she was gone, then I crept through the passageways for who knew how long… it had to be eleven by now. Maybe even closer to midnight. I knew David was often in meetings until the small hours of the morning, and sometimes all night. But he was so tired… and they'd finally gotten rid of the other women. Surely he would have more time to sleep tonight?
But that meant he might come back at any minute.
