As the night grew dark it found us in bed, languid and loose, drowsy, but not sleeping.
I didn't want to sleep.
Zara lay at my side, head on my shoulder, her leg curled over my thighs, her arm thrown over my chest. I trailed lazy fingers up and down her arm, staring into the simple rafters of this place that was never intended to house a King, but that clearly made Zara feel very comfortable and at home.
We hadn't spoken for several minutes, simply resting in the evening together.
It was, perhaps, the most peaceful moment of my life.
I lifted fingers to play through her hair and she sighed happily. "That's the most beautiful feeling. I've always loved it when someone played with my hair.
Making a mental note to do it more often, I turned my head to look at her, our noses bare inches apart.
