It was sweet, and so baldly spoken, I wanted to bat my eyelashes at him and kiss him again. Instead, I made myself let go of his shirt, smooth the front of his jacket, and then meet his eyes.

"I understand what you're saying, that you don't mean to deceive," I whispered. "At least, not about anything important. But you have this ability to just... be. Your face doesn't register anything. You don't react when anyone speaks. You can hide your true feelings—"

"Zara, I deal with Kings and spies and merchants who own more than the crown, it is imperative that I not concede my thoughts at inopportune times!"

"I know. I do! I just... it makes me nervous how easily you can just speak to people as if nothing is going on, and talk about how wonderful the other women are, and... it makes me nervous, David. What if you're hiding things from me? You're so good at it, I wouldn't know!"
