Chereads / I Can See Ghosts / Chapter 7 - Worker (part 2)

Chapter 7 - Worker (part 2)

"Our goal is to get rid of the demon… in this case, the worker. You found this place from that website, right? Now that we have confirmed that it is true, maybe we can trust some other things from that website. So, what should we do?"

I asked Nico, and he began thinking about what we could do in this situation. He found this location through that website, so that website must be trustworthy in giving the information about haunted locations. Knowing this, I'm willing to put my bet on other information that it has shared. For example, a method to defeat a demon.

"I have a plan. There are two of us right now, so let's use that. We made him keep an eye on the both of us. And we enter the building together from the entrance, see which one the worker will go for. If the worker attacks you, then you shoot them with the holy water. But if it goes to me, shout it out and I'll shoot. How does that sound?"

Nico explained his plan, and I nodded. I turned my eyes back to the worker, and it was indeed keeping an eye on the both of us.

I started moving towards the right, while Nico moved to the left. We were forming a distance between one another, and as expected, the worker became confused.

His head is turning back and forth between me and Nico, and I'm sure he is very confused as to which one he should approach first. I turned to Nico, and it looks like he is only guessing where the worker is located, because he is looking at the completely wrong angle.

His eyes are looking way too high.

"The worker is two meters above ground, five meters away from the entrance. Just keep your eyes on a thirty degree angle upwards, and you'll be looking straight at him."

I explained to him so that he would understand better, and Nico began fixing the position of his eyesight.

"This?"

Now, it seems like he really is staring straight at the worker.

"Perfect. Let's keep approaching this way."

"I just realized… if the ghost actually went to me, I would have no way of defending myself because I couldn't see it. So, uh… keep telling me information, okay? I'll just shoot randomly."

"Okay."

Man… this is stressful. We haven't even entered the entrance yet, and I already have so much to think about. Not only do I have to watch myself, but I also have to keep an eye on Nico. My eyes can not be kept staring at the worker, but also towards Nico. This will prove difficult, and having glasses has only made things worse.

Beforelong, we arrived by the entrance. One more step, and we'll be entering the building.

"Ready?"

I said to Nico, and he nodded at me. I decided that I should take the first step, so that the worker will come to me instead of Nico. After all, I have a much higher chance of surviving.

"Let's do it. On three."

Nico said, and I nodded.

"One. Two--"

Right when he said two, I already put my foot forward. And right after I did that, the worker finally made a move.

Just… not what I expected.

"Shoot!!!!"

I shouted very quickly, because what happened was completely out of my expectations.

Nico's legs haven't even moved yet. I was the one who made the first step.

And yet… the worker flew to him.

The demon of a worker flew very quickly towards Nico. He heard my command to shoot, and Nico fired away his toy water gun at the angle that I told him about. It was the perfect angle, too, so it should hit the worker since Nico fired immediately.

But, the holy water only sprayed through the worker.

Seeing the holy water being ineffective, I panicked and could only watch as the worker reached Nico's location. Deep down, a certain fear inside of me was formed.

No… Nico!!!

Move!!!

Nico can only stare forward with confusion, and he kept on firing the holy water. But, those things did nothing to the demon.

And I watched… with both my eyes, when…

The worker stopped?

To my surprise, the worker stopped right in front of Nico. It didn't touch Nico, nor did it possess him. It just stared at Nico's face five centimeters away from one another, and I can see the worker opening his mouth.

'… Leave…"

Leave?

I kept silent when the worker said those words to Nico, who was very confused about what was happening. He couldn't see the worker that was right in front of him, and he was just spitting the holy water from his toy gun.

"Y-You can stop firing…"

I said to Nico, and he quickly stopped shooting. He turned to me wearing a very confused face.

"What is happening?"

He asked, but I'm not sure what to answer.

"The worker is… right in front of you."

"Huh!?!?!"

Nico can only look so frightened, but I kept silent and watched the worker's movements. The dead worker is only staring at Nico's face, not moving an inch.

"The holy water didn't work. It just flew past his body."

"D-Damn… then, what are we going to do?"

"Just… wait."

I continued studying the worker's appearance. He looks exactly like every other spirit that I encountered, and nothing about him is really different. The only thing that is different was in how he was acting as a spirit. Most spirits will just wander aimlessly, except for naughty spirits who do whatever they want.

Maybe… this guy wasn't a demon to begin with, but a naughty spirit?

'Leave… this place…'

So, he was truly… guarding this place. He doesn't want to be bothered, at all. But, why didn't he attack Nico?

Maybe… he really is not a demon?

The worker then turned to me, and now I can see its expression very clearly. I opened my eyes wide, because his next words surprised me deeply.

'Leave… Dangerous…'

At that very moment, I knew the reason for the overprotectiveness of this place. It wasn't because the worker had a lingering attachment to this place. It wasn't because it was holding a grudge. And certainly, it wasn't because the worker liked this place.

He was here to… stop and warn others of the danger.

"What is happening, Elizabeth?"

Nico asked me, but I already lowered my water gun. I turned my gaze around, and I finally found exactly what the worker was talking about.

I didn't see them when we were outside the building. But, now that we have entered, we can finally see exactly why this place is haunted.

The worker was never the demon. He was only a naughty spirit, and he stayed here to warn the living about not coming any closer to this place. Possibly because he has an experience about this place.

He was the only worker that died in this construction site, and no other worker died. This was because he was successful in driving all the other workers away from the true danger of this place. Possibly, because he had already experienced what that danger was truly about.

He died, and he stopped others from experiencing the same thing he went through. Because the thing that got him killed was still inside the building.

The true demon… of this haunted building.

The concrete floor deep inside the building suddenly turned darker, and I didn't even notice that the color of the floor had changed. Beforelong, those dark colored floors suddenly began to grow large bubbles that slowly took shape into people. Pitch black, the newly formed people don't have visible skin and have liquid-like appearance, similar to a black slime.

There are… so many of them.

As the black slime demons gradually got closer to our position, I noticed certain other changes happening to the world around us. A bright green invisible wall can be seen growing and covering the exits. The air became so much smellier than before, and the temperature dropped about five degrees.

Now, even Nico can sense the changes.

"Elizabeth!? What is happening!?"

Nico called out to me, but I just couldn't answer. The things I see in front of me were too much for my brain to figure out, and I know for sure that it will be difficult for us to make it out of here alive.

The black slime demons are already standing straight up, and they are now walking towards our position. At this point, I have completely removed the idea of facing them since there were so many, so I just turned to Nico.

"Leave!!!"

Hearing my command, Nico quickly turned around and faced the invisible green wall.

But,

BAM!!!!

He turned around very quickly and immediately smacked his face on the green wall. He held his nose because it was probably painful, and he turned to me with tearful eyes.

"W-What's blocking me!?"

He asked, but I just don't know what to answer. Genuinely, I don't know what that green wall is.

"A wall…"

"A wall!? Then, how do we leave!?"

I turned my eyes back to the demons that were getting closer, and I bit my lips as I thought deeply. The worker has long disappeared, leaving us with these black slime people that are slowly approaching us. The scent in the air only became so much worse as the demons closed on to us, and even Nico had to cover his mouth.

"What is this smell!? Elizabeth, wake up!! What is happening!?"

Nico shouted as he looked around, but he couldn't see what was going on. He can only panic, not knowing exactly what is happening to us.

But, not even me who is able to see could understand what is going on.

Just what are these black things that are approaching us? And what will happen if they reach us? Why can't we go through the invisible green wall? Are we just stuck here?

Do we… have to fight?

I turned my gaze to Nico and noticed that one of the black slime demons had already gotten quite close to him. Quickly, I lifted my left hand at him.

"Get over here!"

Nico quickly heeded my words and rushed towards my position, and he stood right next to me while pointing his water gun forward.

"Listen closely. There are over fifty of them in front of us, and they are getting closer. Their movement is quite slow, so just listen closely. I won't tell you what they look like, but just know that they are humanoid. No weapons, but don't let them touch you."

"Yeah, but… man, I really brought us into this, didn't I?"

"Forget that for now! Now… listen to every word that I will say. After all… I'm not sure if I can save us from this…"

I said to him, and Nico nodded firmly. I then turned my attention back to the black slimes that were getting closer, and thought deeply as to what we should do.

How do we… get out of this situation?
