Chapter 4 - Part time job

Yan Shu and Song Yun both studied in Fengshan, so they decided to live together. Initially, Song Yun wanted to live in the dormitory, but that was too far away from Yan Shu's part-time job, so they rented an apartment. It wasn't big nor spacious, but it still had three bedrooms. One for each of them with the third being used as a guest room.

It also had a small kitchen and a living room with a couch and a dining table.

Arriving back home, Yan Shu decided to freshen up in her bedroom while Song Yun cooked some food for them.

When Yan Shu left her room, the apartment was filled with the mouth-watering smell of doufunao. She didn't waste time and started eating along with Song Yun.

It didn't take long for the food to run out, after which Yan Shu left for her part-time job. She worked as a translator for the Shen Group, earning 130 yuan per hour.

She learned and became fluent in English thanks to her father, and now it finally came into use. Moreover, she also worked as a math and English private tutor to a 7th-grade child for two hours a day.

She took the bus, reaching her destination after commuting for 10 minutes. She entered the Shen Group building, took the elevator and looked for her team leader to receive her daily task. Yan Shu prayed that she wouldn't receive a huge stack of documents like always.

The full-time workers never finished their daily tasks, meaning that Yan Shu was the one who had to pick up their slack. So it came as a shock when the team leader handed her a single document. "Team leader, are you sure that this is my work for today?" She asked with disbelief.

"Yes," said the woman.

"For the whole day, this is all that I need to do?"

"That is correct."

"Okay then." Yan Shu rushed for her desk before the team leader had a change of mind.

Having a single document to translate was nothing short of a miracle. Maybe praying actually worked.

She sat down, not even bothering to put her bag to the side, and quickly translated the document. She then submitted it to the team leader and took her leave. It wasn't even 5 pm yet.

Yan Shu took the bus and headed to her next destination, the apartment where Hao Ren, her tutee, lived.

Hao Ren was a brilliant and energetic boy. When he was in 5th grade, his father took him to an amusement park and they met with an accident on their way back. A truck's brakes failed, its driver lost control, swerved into oncoming traffic and hit their car headfirst.

The father died on the spot while Hao Ren lost both his legs and stayed a month in a comma.

From that day onward, his mother arranged for him to be homeschooled, afraid that he would suffer from bullying in a normal school.

When Yan Shu arrived in the apartment, she was warmly invited in by the boy. "Welcome Jiejie," he said with a smile.

"Shu'er," his mother, Shen Ruya, spoke, "I need to go out for a bit, maybe half-an-hour. Please take care of Renren while I'm away."

Yan Shu nodded. After the mother left the apartment, she started tutoring Hao Ren. He wanted to translate a book from mandarin to English, and so she taught him some of the basics.

An hour of lesson flew by as they talked and laughed. When Shen Ruya finally returned, Yan Shu finished the lesson for the day, said goodbye to Hao Ren, and took the bus back home.
