Gerald hid behind a tree, watching Zerith and Bertha together. Zerith was cutting logs of wood, and Bertha was helping him. She looked quite relaxed, and she smiled a few times at something he said.
Gerald didn't remember a single time she had smiled around him or because of him in these past days. And now that she was liking Zerith's company, Gerald felt the surging jealousy inside him.
He was cursing Zerith to the moon and back, but his anger toward Bertha was growing too. Was she doing that deliberately?
But she didn't know about his presence, and yet she was acting like that with Zerith. Did that mean she indeed liked him?
But how could that be possible? That tender look in her eyes, those gentle touches, the frowns he received when he acted carelessly, did they mean nothing to her? Gerald's heart sank at that thought.
