He didn't have a bad dream last night because the smoke managed to save him. It was like a habit. If he saw smoke before going to bed, then he would dream of smoke, not blood. Thus, he would not have nightmares if he had at least one cigarette before going to sleep.
He wasn't afraid of blood, but it was different if he saw blood in his nightmares. Moreover, the blood he saw in his nightmare was not just ordinary. The crimson liquid seemed to be recorded in his brain along with a setting identical to what he had seen years ago, and the only thing that could save him from the blood was smoke.
Therefore, he didn't care even if he had started smoking when he was very young. When he grew up, he knew that smoking at such a young age was not normal, but he couldn't do anything about it because it had become a part of his life.
