"Mother, I'm home," she said, watching her mother inside her husband's arms.
The time was already past three in the morning and she wasn't expecting anyone to be awake in the house. Especially her mother being comforted by her husband who she wasn't expecting to be home.
"Lilly Rose!" Rosa pushed Matthew away and dashed to welcome her daughter. "Are you okay?" She reached out to touch her cheeks. They were cold and she furrowed her eyebrows with dissatisfaction. She had been waiting for her to come home. She fought the sleepiness she was feeling and was glad to have Matthew as a distraction while she waited for her.
Lilly Rose let her mother hug her but her eyes were on Matthew who was standing in the hallway, his hands in his pants pocket. He looked tired from the dark shadows under his eyes. His suit was crumpled, something that she had never seen on him. His necktie was shoved in the breast pocket of his dress shirt.
