The shadows swallowed Rowan as he left the world behind in search of Wren.
Wren's anguish wrapped around his heart like the finest of threads, linking them through the connection they'd shared from the very first song.
He cursed the Creature for triggering Wren's spiral today, both with the poison it had left in Wren's head and what it had left at the inn, and he blamed his father for his part in it all.
But most of all, Rowan was angry with himself for not being more careful when he knew Wren was teetering on the edge.
"I'm coming, Wren…stay where you are."
The shadows wouldn't move fast enough to keep up with the desperate pounding of Rowan's heart as he tried to find his way into Wren's illusion space. It was never easy to reach, but today it felt farther away than usual.
