The shadows swirled around Rowan's feet, and the air convulsed as if making room for his presence. A sense of otherness swallowed him and made his head spin. The warmth of Wren's body and the scent of his skin served as his anchor.
"Wait for it to pass so that your body will be more accustomed to it next time, then we will go to the clearing. I promise it will get easier for you," Wren said.
Rowan rested his head against Wren's shoulder as he breathed through the nausea. Typically when Wren moved him through the shadows, it happened so quickly he didn't have time to see anything more than the muted blur of the world flowing around him. Now that he stood still in that in between realm, he was struck by the familiarity of it.
It took him a moment to place it, but he realized he'd been here before. It had existed inside Tamlyn that time Rowan had tried to save her, when the energy of the poison had almost sucked him away from reality altogether.
