Emily's POV
I eventually made it to the top and I felt the world stop.
For a second, what I saw was an image that would take years of therapy and alcohol for me to move on from. My husband was in his own pool of blood with one of his hands tightly gripping a wood spear. He must have craved it somehow.
His other hand was wrapped around something I couldn't see because Waylen was partly facing away from me.
No Xavier.
My mind registered instantly.
One problem at a time, I convinced myself.
Waylen probably stowed our child away in a safe place while he waited for help.
Smart!
Very smart and strategic!
I watched him.
He was pale like he was intentionally deprived of his blood.
I froze and that image stayed with me for some minutes.
But then I heard voices behind me and it seemed to snap me out of my trance.
