Ever since Xīnyí made the claim that the Empress had sent her new incense, the imperial Harem was left in complete disarray. The consorts spoke in length about the possiblity, and subsequently started to take sides.
It didn't take long for the gossip to reach the Empress's hearing, and when it did, she immediately went to confront Xínyí at her hall.
"Empress, I have been expecting your arrival, may I pour you a cup of tea?" Xīnyí asked on her feet with clasped hands.
"Don't pretend to be receptive, consort Xīnyí, what are your claims in regard to the rumours spreading across the harem?" The Empress demanded, leaving formalities behind.
Seeing as there was no need to pretend, she signalled her maids to bring a chair for the Empress, but the woman was adamant and remained standing.
Heaving a heavy sigh, she replied, "It is just speculation, but as they say, there is one truth in a thousand lies."
