Janet didn't approach her nine-year-old son about it at all until two days later. She thought maybe he was being bullied at school or had a problem with one of his teachers since she would pick him up in the evenings at school.
Janet thought that he was leaving to go somewhere else instead of home during school hours since they never caught him on any of the security cameras and the security guards frequently roaming the property had never seen him, but in truth, William was just too smart.
He knew the location of all the cameras and memorized their blind spots and he knew how lazy the security guards were.
Janet didn't want to rush or scare him, like a good mother, she wanted him to come to her or go to his father, but William was always distant and secretive.
At the dinner table, she asked him, "How is school, William?"
"It's fine," he simply responded, not bothering to look up from his plate.
