Chapter 29 - The Car Accident

Luna hurried down the hospital corridor toward the emergency room, where grandma Li and Danish Li were being treated following the fatal accident. Her pale face was tinged with fear. Her mother was striding beside her, mumbling soothing words to her terrified daughter.

"Calm down, my dear. Don't freak out."

"T-they told me t-that... their condition is... getting worse due to the car crash," eeriness escaped her shaking lips as she walked a few feet to her destination.

"Trust me, they'll be fine." That woman next to Luna didn't give up on her daughter's comfort.

Luna dashed toward that middle-aged man in a white cloak as soon as her eyes noticed him slipping out of the emergency room's door.

"Doctor .…" The crease between his brows indicated that he questioned her motive for rushing toward him. "My name is Luna Yang, and I am Mrs. Li Yu Wei's daughter in law. How is she doing? And... What about Danish Li?"

"They require surgery immediately due to their critical condition." Luna had to resist the urge to ask more questions as doctor Hwang, whose name Luna had seen on his name tag, continued his explanation. "But, there are two women inside the room who have confessed to being her daughter and daughter in law." Luna's pupils dilated as she wondered who they were.

He must not have been referring to her aunt Jang Mi and uncle Chen because they were in the police station being interrogated for information about the accident.

"You must be mistaken. I'm her daughter in law."

"Doctor, who are they?" Luna's mother seized the opportunity to inquire about the two strangers he was referring to.

"Ms. Sandra Li and Ana Wang…" Sandra and Ana emerged from the emergency room's half-opened door as the doctor mentioned their names.

They acted normally when they found Luna and her mother talking to the doctor, as if they had anticipated her arrival. Only their teary eyes signaled that they had been through difficult times.

Moving past Luna and her mother, they feigned not to notice their existence and just abandoned them without saying anything.

Sandra was both Grandma Li's daughter and Danish's mother, and Luna should not question her presence in the hospital. That woman must have been the most affected by this incident. And Ana's love for Danish was undeniable as Danish's girlfriend. The accident had thrown her into the deepest pit of misery. Luna could feel it because her own heart was suffering in the same way, despite the fact that there was no room in Danish's heart for her.

Luna's fingers flew to her eyes, brushing away the rheum that was falling. After Sandra and Ana had left, the doctor allowed them to enter the emergency room to see Grandma Li and Danish. Luna and her mother strode into the emergency room to check on them.

Grandma Li's helpless body was sprawled on the bed. On the other bed, her grandson's pathetic torso lay with a bandage wrapped around the top of his head.

"Grandma…,Danish…." Luna's gaze alternated between Grandma Li and Danish.

Luna couldn't stop the tears from streaming down her cheeks. They had only recently celebrated her and Danish's engagement, and now that old woman and her grandson have lost consciousness as a result of the accident.

Luna's mother massaged her daughter's shoulders to relieve the pain. It didn't work because the tears began to flow again from her eyes. Her hands gently rested Luna's head on her shoulder, sharing her anguish.

"Right now, all we can do is pray for their recovery." Her mother spoke to her in her ear. Luna bowed in agreement as she turned to face her mother.

Aunt Jang Mi and uncle Chen exited the doctor's room with a sad face and went straight to meet Luna and her mother, who had sat patiently waiting for the doctor's information for a long time. They had just returned from the police station a half hour before going to see the doctor. The doctor only wanted to speak with Grandma Li's daughter because she was her guardian. That's why Luna and her mother chose to remain outside.

Aunt Jang Mi and uncle Chen sat languidly next to Luna before saying something. Their exchanged glance confirmed that they were unsure whether or not to communicate the outcome of both the doctor's diagnosis and the police's investigation into the accident.

"The surgery will be performed tonight; any delay will only worsen their condition and may result in death." Uncle Chen used the opportunity to inform Luna and her mother of what the doctor had told him. Luna's mother hugged her daughter tightly to calm her heart. She could see her panic through her eyes and trembles. "And, according to the police investigation..."

"Honey…." Aunt Jang Mi cut him off while shaking her head, indicating to her husband that he should not continue his sentence.

"They have been harmed by someone. They did something to Danish's car, causing the brake to fail."

"What?" Luna and her mother both exclaimed in disbelief at what they had just heard. "Uncle, you're not serious, are you?" Luna's statement was met with a nod from uncle Chen, confirming her word.

"No...." Luna's exclamation drew the attention of not only her mother, but also her uncle and aunt. Their puzzled expressions awaited her next words. "If that's the case, the person they intended to murder is me..."

"What are you on about, Luna?" Luna's mother jerked away from Lune, her eyes fixed on Luna, demanding an explanation. "I should have been in that car with you, Mom, not Danish. Danish exchanged the car for no apparent reason before leaving the hotel." Aunt Jang Mi, uncle Chen, and Luna's mother all looked at her in shock and horror at the same time.

"The police will do further investigation regarding the accident." uncle Chen added.

Uncle Chen's report drowned Luna out and pushed her into the depths of another calamity. Not only that, but the incident demonstrated that her safety was not guaranteed as long as she remained in Grandma Li's house and in Danish's world. She couldn't, however, flee Li's family because her fate was tied to them.

Luna remembered something before the party ended as her mind wandered. Ana climbed into the lift and headed for the lower floors. Could she have gone to the parking lot?
