Chapter 22 - Weekend

"Emma?"

I quickly shut my laptop. "V-Vanessa"

She opened the door walking in. "Dinner," she said with a smile on her lips but I didn't smile back, getting the picture her smile faintly vanished.

"Right," she muttered. "You're still angry about what I said"

"I understand you, not that I don't. I mean they are a big shot family and you're weary that I'm befriending them because I might not feel among"

Her eyes lit up as well as her face, that was quick. "Yes! That's it! Holy! You're so smart that's exactly why"

Too quick… my eyes narrowed.

"They are a very important family and getting involved might hurt you and draw you deep into their world, which is dangerous"

"We're still talking about their status right?"

"Of course, what else?" she shrugged, croaking her side lip up. Because that very moment I felt she was drifting to something other than that.

"I understand Vanessa"

Her smile broadened. "Come down for dinner okay?"

I nodded, and she nodded before walking out, the door slamming shut. At the sound of the dangling dream-catcher against the window, I face it. Vanessa says it all even if she doesn't want to, there was something she definitely wasn't telling me, and I knew that now.

~

"Tell me, honey, how's your weekend going? Oh please tell me you're hanging out with friends and not in your room reading manga's"

I snickered, adjusting the new frame for my glasses. "Well I'm not reading manga right now mom, working my frame"

"What happened to the other one?"

"Cracked, had a ball slammed to my face in sports"

"Oh my god, honey are you okay?"

"Yes, at least no more headaches. Humiliating? Yes!"

"Oh honey" she pouts in that motherly tone she still uses for me, I'm 16 mom! "That must have hurt"

I snickered. "That's exactly what Vanessa said" I was amused. "She said you got…"

"Pricked by a needle and almost brought the house down?"

I laughed. "Close enough"

She laughed too. "Well there's a good hospital there in case you're out of frames"

My eyes scanned the mini box of frames I had. "I doubt that", my mom's idea, she always had me carry a box of this when we traveled, I had bad eyesight since I was little and due to that I always get my frame cracked when I fell, yeah, I was such a clumsy kid so since then this box was as old as me.

"Never be too careful"

Exactly what I knew she would say. "I miss you mom"

"I miss you too honey"

My phone vibrates and I slide it off my pocket, seeing the name. "Mom I will call you back, got a call from a friend"

"Well that's something I'm willing to hear, make sure you get outta the house young lady"

I chuckled. "Okay mom" the call ended and I was still amused. I tapped on my ear plug. "Hey"

"Hey" Owen's voice came in. "So city girl got any plans for today?"

I was done setting my new frame, so I switched before seating on the bed. "Are you asking me out, Sherman?"

"N-No," he laughed. I smiled, this weekend wasn't boring thanks to him, he called me a number of times just to check on me and I have gotten quite comfortable with him, it was nice. Although I hoped a certain person who asked me for my number would at least call but... Nada it was always Owen's name popping up.

I couldn't count the number of times I attempted to call Dace and text him, it was complete torture and I was lucky enough not to do any, but it still hurts! I wondered if he was still angry? But I would always shake my head and try not to think about it. I should know my place. Yes, ever since I searched their family I knew exactly where I stood, even though Vanessa didn't exactly mean what I'm thinking I was smart enough to understand my place.

"I mean it's something like that but it's with the gang, are you doing anything?"

My eyes darted to the manga on the bed I was hoping to read but then I remembered my mom's words. "Currently... no"

"Um that's great, we're planning to go to the beach"

"Beach?!"

"Kidding! It's a Mall I mean, Sarah always has her ways of taking us along and the guys wanted to get something too but it's just her so…"

"Do not worry, even if I don't have any fashion sense I will try to be a companion for her"

He snickered. "That's great, pick you up?"

"Sure"

~

I packed my hair up in a top bun before sliding on a white shirt and knitted sky blue cardigan with a cloud imprint on it and tight jeans, I grabbed my cross knitted bag heading downstairs.

"Oh she's going out, I thought Sunday you're gonna be in this boring house," Vanessa said.

"Well you too are in this boring house, I thought maybe work this weekend?"

She relaxed on the chair dropping a book I noticed she was reading before taking off her glasses. "I will have you know have a... Shop"

I raised an eyebrow. "Lemme guess, dream-catcher thingies and voodoo stuff?"

"The dream-catcher is among but seriously voodoo? I sell fragrance, young lady"

"Right"

"And candles, more fragrance and- "

"Okay okay, I heard"

Thank god the horn blew. "That's my cue," I said walking out.

"Have fun! With Owen!" she called out.

I was already out but I heard her. Wait... how does she know I was going out with Owen? I don't remember telling her that.
