"Doris was right. She looks disgraceful," came another comment from a woman standing next to Gladys.
"That dress is not befitting a Lady." said another woman to the right of Rose.
"Did you see that girl ignoring the Duchess while she was talking to her?" said someone else. "How embarrassing for her, Highness."
"I heard tell she is quite the temptress, and Allison Millner ran her off from their home to protect her brother." said a woman in a blue dress standing next to another group of ladies.
The entire room was filled with whispered chatter about Rose, and it wasn't good. Some ladies giggled, and others tutted in shame at the sight of her.
The most painful comment came from Madeline Elaine herself. Rose was certain that it was she who had started the gossip.
