The following two days were filled with last-minute details and preparations for the winter ball. There was barely enough time to think. Rose was grateful to be busy and distracted. Working helped take her mind off of Christopher.
Nights were a different story. That is when Rose suffered the worst. She could not sleep thinking about the awful things she and Christopher said to each other. The nightmares of that evening would wake her, replaying the scene of The Lord walking away from her forever.
The night before the ball, Rose jumped from her bedroom window and wandered into the woods. She sat under the old oak and thought about a million ways she could apologize to Christopher. The stress of it was wearing her down.
