The darkness of night had descended, and the lights of the city's businesses glowed brightly along the sidewalks of London. Rose looked about and took in the surrounding nightlife.
She heard voices of small boys holding torches call out on the street corner across from them. The little urchins were trying to entice customers to hire them as walking street lamps to guide them to their next destinations.
Christopher observed Rose surveying her strange surroundings. He could see the curiosity light up in her honey-hued eyes.
He leaned down and uttered in her ear, "Those are link-boys. You pay them to take you about the city, and they guide you where you want to go with their torch lights."
Rose did not look up at Christopher, and she only nodded at his explanation. She was too busy sightseeing to be bothered with conversation.
