Evangeline watched as Kane disappeared into his bedchamber, shutting the door with a soft click behind him.
When she left the lord and lady to nap, she sensed there was something troubling Lord Alexsander, by his creased brow and unnaturally stiff smile when he greeted her.
She was curious about what was eating at him. As most things never really seemed to bother the man.
Meanwhile, in his room, Kane removed his uniform, laying his clothing on the chair. He slid in bed beside his precious little Sparrow, drawing her back to his front so he could snuggle with her.
He wanted to shut out the world and close off his mind. Kane was mentally worn out.
However, the words from the quatrain kept replaying in his head. The haunting phrases gave him an overwhelming feeling of unease that nagged at the back of his brain.
None of it made any sort of sense.
