I was passing table by table dragging a log of muscles along me that refused to move, not being discreet about it. Christine had to lend me a hand to push him from behind while we both struggled to maintain the best of our smiles.
I made sure to greet everyone and ask their names though my small brain barely registered them for more than two seconds. But I had to put out my most polite version for the sake of my dear husband, who was scowling darkly the whole time.
Christine hushed in my ears, telling me that the reason for his sour mood was not only this entire set I had created but also the money he was robbed of- his words, not hers.
I controlled my urge to snap at him and kept covering his unpleasantness with my politeness. People were a little apprehensive about opening up in front of Devon, but after a bit of persuasion and forcing a smile that looked more like a favour he had done on those poor souls, people began to speak up.
