Gender-based violence is a serious violation of human rights and a life-threatening health and protection issue. It is estimated that one out of three women will experience sexual or physical violence in their lifetime. 

According to Jeanne Ward (2008), Men and women, boys and girls, may all be subjected to gender-based violence. However, women and girls are by far the most affected group. Gender-based violence may manifest in numerous ways; domestic violence, rape, torture, trafficking, forced prostitution and marriage. 

Concern Worldwide states that while some progress has been made in the fight of gender-based violence, it still remains one of the major human rights issue around the world.
