Sonya continued to reminisce about watching over Hildie. She had been a delightful child, but once her husband's heart and health failed, she could not care for her. By this time, Hildie had come of age and could go to work. She left Sonya and found employment caring for the Baron's sickly wife and daughter.
The air was filled with raucous laughter and the unmistakable sound of shattering glass. Sonya snapped out of her deep thoughts and quickly stood up to investigate the source of the commotion. Her eyes widened as she witnessed the three men from earlier hurling a bottle toward a defenseless black dog.
Upon closer inspection, Sonya noticed it was not a dog at all, but a massive black wolf. Its unusually icy blue eyes surveyed the rowdy men, and it circled them cautiously for a time. After a few minutes, the men, still covered in blood, left. She watched as the wolf stalked after them.
