Merrick's mind drifted to the harrowing encounter that had unfolded earlier when they became separated. Suddenly, a vivid recollection flooded his thoughts - the sight of the inky black blood that sprayed across Carter's body during their intense confrontation with the Girox.
Merrick pondered. "Could this be the reason he was in this condition? Did the black blood suddenly cause this hearty warrior of his to collapse?"
A couple of men from the logging camp came to Merrick's and Carter's aid. They helped the vice commander carry his subordinate to the fireside. In the faint glow of the campfire, Merrick examined Carter's body carefully and there, on his right thigh, he saw blood gushing from his leg.
