"I can't escape this horrid destiny," the Duke mumbled. He glanced over at Merrick, who was bent over with his bloody hands on his knees, still trying to catch his breath.
"I don't want to watch my wife die just to bless me with an heir."
Merrick's golden-hued eyes met Sterling's, and he could see the agony in his eyes.
"If you really love Faye, then change her destiny. Instead of pushing her away."
"Haven't you already saved her once—by not allowing her to go to the temple in the capital? You saw her impending death when the clerics wanted to take her, and you changed it."
"Why not try to do it again?"
Sterling sat up, wiping his bloody lip on his sleeve. He rested his head on his arms, propped up on his knees.
"What I saw—It's different this time, Merrick… It's not something we can run from. She will die in childbirth."
He glanced at his friend and fellow knight, seeking his advice. "Tell me then, how can I change that?"
