When Sterling entered the bedchamber, he noticed Faye sitting on the bed's edge, her brow creased and lips turned down in a frown, as if displeased about something, while she stared at her bare ankle.
He realized in a flash what Faye looked so unhappy about. It was her missing anklet; he had removed it when he lost his senses after returning from Easthaven.
In a way, seeing her so worried about the missing chain on her leg made Sterling come to understand that Faye was more invested in their marriage than he had previously understood.
To her, this was not just some contract she was fulfilling.
Her words earlier and all her actions through these past few months proved to him she was serious about the love she felt for him.
Even though she had no choice, she took what she had been given and made the best of it. Instead of fighting and objecting. She had embraced him and this marriage and made it hers.
