"FAYE! Open your eyes and look at me," Sterling said, his voice low and urgent. He gave her a firm shake, feeling her tiny frame quiver in response. The hall was dark, and it was difficult to see her face. There was only a sliver of light filtering through from his study door.
He waited for her to respond. Finally, Faye opened her eyes, and what stared back at him in the darkness was desolation and anguish.
He held her by the arms as he talked to her. "It is not your fault. You were a child and hold no blame for what happened to your father. Don't you understand even prayers cannot protect people from all the demons in this world?"
