Chapter 6 - New Developments

Liam's POV

The first thing I did after I returned from work was check up on her. And when I reached her room, she was still asleep. Anna kept me updated on everything throughout the day, and after her job was done I dismissed her. With her in the way, focusing on Amelie alone would be difficult.

Without making much noise, I settled beside her and watched her as she slept. She disgusted me, yet I couldn't deny the field of attraction between the both of us. It wasn't her appearance that got me annoyed or anything, it was her character.

She was far too weak emotionally, and at times so narrow minded that it became annoying. At first, it was charming, probably because I saw a bit of my mother in her.

We were in our final days in college when we first met, in a send off party to be precise. Back then she was popular for her looks and humble character, which was a trait that was never associated with popular girls. And there was me, the son of the richest business tycoon in the city. Everyone wanted us together, the popular kids should always be lovers, right?

We danced to the drums of our peers, and got together merely out of peer pressure. But soon, our fake feelings blossomed, and we fell in love with each other. Three years later, we got married. And at first everything was going fine, that was until I lost my mother.

Some rival business tycoons were after my father. But instead of going for their target, they went for the only person who they knew couldn't defend herself, my mother. She had gone out to do the groceries on a Sunday evening, she was humble enough to do so, even when we had servants who basically did everything for us. Her dead body was found the next morning after she didn't return home, right in front of our porch.

It was at that moment that my life changed. I understood immediately that there was no place for the Kindhearted people in this reality. Their kindness would only be exploited, and they would do nothing but suffer for not adapting to the cruel system of society. Only the strong survived, there was no room for weaklings in this life.

This was exactly why I hated Amelie. Despite everything that I put her through, she still decides to love me. She shed tears for me every night I came home drunk. I hated her, why wouldn't she stand up for herself? Why can't she understand that kindness could only get you so little in life?

Turning my gaze away from her face, I trailed her exposed skin down to her laps. She was still perfect, just as she was seven years ago. Subconsciously, I lifted my hands placed them on her laps, then slowly I progressed towards her curves. But before I could get to the desired spot, she rose from the bed and stopped midway.

"I could have you arrested for sexual harassment." She fired at me the moment her eyes flung open.

I scoffed before replying. "It's not harassment if the other party enjoys it too."

"You're disgusting Liam." She spat out and rose from the bed rather dramatically. "Is this what you do to all the women you come across? Have your way with them because you feel you can?"

"I can have you arrested for defamation, be careful how you speak." I cautioned. I agreed that I acted out of line, but I was not a harasser of women. I was anything but that. Now that she brought this topic up, I was suddenly inclined to ask her a question that has been troubling me all day.

"How many lovers have you had since our divorce?"

Her eyes widened expressively at my question, and I immediately knew she had an interesting answer to give me. Amelie was good looking, and with her character she definitely had a flock of men waiting in line for her everyday.

"How dare you ask a lady such a question?" She threw at me in a bit to escape the question, but I was resilient.

"Are you afraid that I might call you a slut? I promise I won't." I assured.

"Shut up!" She retaliated in mild rage. "My love life is none of your concern."

"So zero then?" I concluded. It was clear on her face. And if she had a boyfriend, he probably would be obsessed with her. Her phone would be buzzing with calls and messages on a regular. It was just the Amelie Lodge effect.

I had no idea why, but I was happy with the fact that she hadn't entered another relationship since ours. The mere thought of having another man on her made my blood boil.

"What about you, how many lovers have you had?"

"My love life is none of your concern." I used her own words against her. It must have hurt cause she closed the distance between us in an instant. She probably wanted to slap me again, it seemed to be a hobby.

"Get out of my room." She said instead.

"This is my house." I reminded. "And this is our room." I corrected.

"What? You cannot be serious. I'm booking a hotel room right away." I snatched her phone away before she could make any attempts of booking reservations. Her screen was cracked, but it did seem to function perfectly. I felt sorry for her, it must be hard living a poor life. Which was exactly why I couldn't risk losing to that backstabbing bastard, Casmir.

"Give me my phone back." She ordered, but in response I sent the phone face first into the ground, destroying it permanently. Now I had crossed the line, and once again she had slapped me across the face.

"I'm sorry." She was quick to apologize. I ignored her and stood from the bed, I was exhausted, and not in the mood for drama. Dinner should be ready by now, and I could see she was hungry.

"Dinner should be ready soon, get yourself cleaned up and be downstairs before eight." I informed before taking my leave. I had to admit, a little things have changed about her. The old Amelie could never think of raising her hand at me. The thought of it would probably cause her to cry back then. Although she hadn't changed much, I was impressed with the recent development. It was weird, but those painless slaps of hers had a way of turning me on.
