Isabelle pursed her lips as she paced, pressing her fingers to her chin.
There was still no answer, no indication, as to who had tried to slip that disastrous tax hike into her decrees. The obvious take - in her opinion - is that this was the latest of the rebellion's scheming attempts.
But this was...so much smaller. More subtle. Was it really the same people who'd burned down part of the city and unleashed a deadly plague, or twice tried to assassinate her directly?
This wasn't in line with their noisy declarations of her being unfit to rule or their grand delusion that the kingdom was all rotten.
They'd never tried anything this...subtle. This quiet.
Unless...
She stopped pacing, and her heartbeat picked up.
Unless they've been quietly undermining her in other ways. In ways that have stayed hidden to her, that she didn't have the luck of catching.
Her hand shook.
