Chapter 52 - The Royal Ball

I'm reasonably comfortable in my belief that this crowded town will hamper whoever it is sending men after Lucas, and as a result I finally get a decent night's sleep - even better than the one in Ardani, thanks to my healed shoulder.

Once the day comes, Lucas putters around with the horses outside the inn.

"We need to get you dressed in something passable."

"Excuse me?"

He nods to my armor. "A dress of some sort, I mean. The ball has an enforced dress standard. Technically weapons aren't allowed, but I assume you have plenty of places to hide daggers on your person."

My lips quirk.

He wants me to break the rules? I'm good at that.

However... "I don't wear dresses."

He raises an eyebrow. "You dress like that and the only place the ticket will take you is the guard's barracks. We need you to be in a dress. We don't have time to have one made, so we'll have to buy one. Come along, my stalwart guardian."

I bite my tongue.
