So that's why Roland had us navigate those halls in pitch black and silence.

I should have picked up on that due to his silence, if nothing else.

He must be able to remember the precise layout of this maze even in complete darkness.

There really isn't another man like Roland left in the world. He truly is one of a kind.

A moment later the sounds disappear. There is a pregnant pause, and I find myself holding my breath, waiting. 

Soon, the scraping of stone begins again, but it is in the opposite direction. The assassin - as I assume it must be, another deadly kidnapper like the last - turned the wrong way.

Tense as I am, Roland looks completely relaxed, as he reads and rereads the note.

His gaze flickers up to Lucas, then, setting the letter down on a small table in the room. "Before anything else, we need to get that tracker off of you. You're a walking death sentence for anyone around you."
