Chapter 3 - The man in suit

Daphne

It has been three months since the shootout that happened at Daphne's wedding. She had been living in fear ever since the day she was able to escape from her unfortunate wedding. Daphne could sometimes still hear gunshots even though nothing was there. She easily got shaken by anything that startled her. The sadness in Daphne's heart gets worse each day as she continues to live her life in hiding, in fear that Noah will one day find her.

Her fears were so bad that within three months, she couldn't count the number of times she had changed her location.

Daphne didn't know her birth mum, she was told by her father at a young age that her prostitute of a mother abandoned her. Daphne had never cared back then. Even though her father told her that she was abandoned, she never felt the pain of being abandoned, because Nanny Elina was there. Elina was like a mother to Daphne.

Time was running out for Daphne and she knew that. If she continues to hide in Oaks City, Noah is going to find her eventually. The city was big, but not that big. And Noah's men were already searching over city for her. Daphne knew that she should leave but she was still waiting for nanny Elina. She wants to believe that Elina will find her and that she won't be alone. Tony and the other men could still be alive. They could all leave Oaks City together as the family they had always been. Without nanny Elina, Daphne felt like an orphan. Daphne had lived all her life with guns around her, but her failed wedding left a horrible mark on her, although she carried a pistol with her for safety, she doubted she could ever use it.

"Hey! What do you think you are doing, daydreaming on the job, do you think you are allowed to rest when you are not done washing?" Grant, Daphne's boss glares at her. He added more dirty dishes to the ones Daphne already had to wash. "What was I thinking when I hired you." He grumbles under his breath. Regret laces his voice. He needed someone perfect for the job, a hard worker, Daphne, and her little fragile frame, wasn't what he needed. But Grant fell for the innocent looks in Daphne's eyes when she begged him for the Job.

"I'm sorry sir. I will work faster." Daphne tried working faster. But the soapy plate in her hands, slip out of her grip and shattered on the floor.

Grant's face turned red with anger as he walked out of the kitchen before Daphne had the chance to apologize.

Daphne gathers the piece of the broken plate. For a long time, she was lost in her thoughts, thinking about nanny Elina. Before her current job as a dishwasher, she had done other minor jobs, most times, desperately begging the business owners to hire her, like Mr Grant, and they regretted their decision. While Daphne was in college, her late father never allowed her to do any minion job, he told her that there was no need for it, because he had enough money to last her for a lifetime, even though if the person she wanted to marry in the future was poor. Daphne knew that her father would never allow her to marry a poor man. Her late dad says many things to deceive her, things that could make her think that she was allowed to make her own life choices herself, but the only thing he never lied about was his money. He had enough illegal money on different accounts that couldn't be traced by the police.

Using her account and her father would have been easy for Daphne, but she didn't because she knew that Noah was waiting for her to do it, that way he could easily track her. Daphne had enough cash she hoped to use to get herself and nanny Elina out of the city. She couldn't return home after trying to kill Noah, but she was able to get some money from one of her father's secret hideouts before the place was surrounded by Noah's men who were searching for her.

"Daphne, I need you to deliver the food to some tables over there." Mr Grant frowns as he looks at the floor and remembers the plate she broke a few minutes ago. "I change my mind, don't do that. Just go write out their orders instead. I need more helping hands out there." Mr Grant left the kitchen to call another employee who would wash his plate without breaking it.

"Yes sir." Daphne removed her kitchen apron which was already wet with water. When she had started looking for jobs, she had thought of the idea of changing her name, but she didn't because she felt like she had lost too much already because of Noah. She wasn't going to lose the name her late father gave to her. It felt like the only thing she had. Even though she could no longer live her life the way she once did.

The door to the restaurant was open as Daphne was writing out the orders of a customer. A new customer came in. At first, Daphne took a little glance at him, but she removed her eyes from her little note and stared at the man again. Fear caught her heart as the man removed his sunglasses and looked around the restaurant. Daphne hid herself from his eyes, in a dark curtain close to the window. The people eating their food gave her a weird stare but she didn't care.

Daphne didn't know who the man in the black suit was but she wasn't planning on sticking around to find out. No one could be trusted. His dress was suspicious. Everyone who came to the restaurant wore casual clothing. Grant restaurant wasn't a big fancy restaurant. Daphne wouldn't have applied for a job if it was. She needed a place where she could hide herself, and a well-known place was a bad idea.

"What do you want?" Grant asks the man in a suit who walks up to him. His voice was unfriendly, he didn't know what the man in front of him wanted but he couldn't tell that he wasn't in his restaurant to eat.

"I'm looking for someone." The man in the suite said discreetly as he looked around to see if anyone was paying attention to him.

Daphne heard him, she tried to leave the restaurant but she clumsily stumbled against him. While hiding her face, she ran out of the restaurant, thinking back to what she thought to had seen in his suit pocket. It was a police badge, but Daphne didn't believe that he was an officer. She needed to leave Oaks City. If she took too long, Noah was going to find her.
