Liam gulped as he realized that he was right. They are investigating both murders as if it was done by the same guy.
And they are convinced that he is that guy.
Liam remembered that conversation he had that day. One of the local cops was the one questioning him and he was a little tipsy then. He decided on divorcing Rory that day and all he could think of that day was divorce.
And that's all he talked about. And that's how he missed informing the cops that he saw Laura in that abandoned parking lot with another guy.

"Listen to me..." Liam leaned forward. "I know you think that the two murders were done by the same guy. And I think you are right."
"And?" the agent smirked.
"But you got the wrong guy. I'm not the one who committed those murders. I have proof."
