Chereads / My Masked Lover / Chapter 38 - Dumbfounded

Chapter 38 - Dumbfounded

"Are you okay?" Sly asked the tone of voice he made use of, not like the one he normally makes use of when talking to me.

"I'm fine!" I bite out. The caring tone he made use is causing my heart to ache more.

"Are you su —"

"I said I'm fine!" I rush up the stairs and didn't stop until I reach my room. I banged the door behind me, and lean on the door.

God!

Is this the feeling cheating spouses get when they cheat on their husbands?

I turned and turned, but I wasn't able to sleep that night, not until the early hours of the morning? That was the only time that I took a rest. Even at that, it was cut short by the knock on my door.

"Who's that?" I begrudgingly rose from my bed, and walk towards the door, looking like a zombie reincarnated.

"Rise and shine, honey, it's a new day!" Marli smiled brightly when I opened the door.

"Get out. I need to rest," I rub my eyes as I yawned.

Being awake and standing made me dizzy and sleepy.

I need to go back to bed. Its lures are calling out to me.

"As much as I would have loved to oblige your request, I don't think it's possible."

"Why? Is the world coming to an end?" I yawn. "If it's not, allow me to take a rest." I turn to go back to my beckoning bed.

"Sly wants you to join him for breakfast."

" What?" I turn to face her. My sleepiness just vanished instantly. My eyes got brighter and more focused.

"I told him you'll like to sleep in since it's a weekend, but he didn't listen. He asked me to bring you down."

"God!"

"Can you quit calling his name in vain?" She frowned at me.

"Sorry about that." I scratch my hair, "what I'm I going to do now?"

" What else?" She scoffed, "All you have to do is get dressed and join him for breakfast."

"What about the kiss!" I whisper and yelled.

"Can you quit talking about that already? I'm kinda bored with the kissing stuff. It's not as if the kiss lasted."

"But —"

"You are acting like a child. Get in there, get dressed, and come out. I know how much you hate cold pancakes."

She made it seem as if forgetting them to kiss is easy stuff. To her, it might be easy, but the same can't be said of me.

It was my first kiss!

I thought my first kiss will be with my husband, but it turned out someone else doubles crossed him. Or better yet, I aided the person is double-crossing him.

"You —"

"Just get inside there already. You're wasting time as it is now."

"I'll be right back."

"Better. I'll be out here waiting for you!" She called out, a bit enthusiastic.

"I won't keep you waiting."

I hastily took my bath and put on my normal house clothing. I took extra care in making sure my hair is well combed, and my clothes were wrinkle-free.

"You are only going for breakfast, why dress this way?" She gave my shorts a look.

"This is how I normally dress on a weekday." I roll my eyes at her, "stop making it seem as if I'm dressing to impress."

I'm merely dressing to keep the guilt at bay.

"And who said you are not?" She folded her arm.

"Let's go." I take her hand in hers and drag her downstairs.

At the foot of the stair, I let go of her hand, took a deep breath, and walked towards the dining.

You have to be strong, Lee. There's no way for him to know what happened. You don't have to act guilty.

Of course, I am guilty.

"Don't worry about it. Everything will be okay." Marli smiled at me, "don't forget, I'm always rooting for you."

"I'll keep that in mind." I took a deep breath before I entered the dining.

Sly was sitting on his favourite dining chair when I came in.

Dressed in a tank top and dark blue jeans shorts, he looks homier than I've ever seen him.

Had it not been for the fact I've lived with him for over a year now, I wouldn't have thought him the same as the Sly I know.

"Good morning," I greet him.

"Morning." He nods, "how was your night?"

"Par — pardon?" I blink in surprise as I tried to process his words.

Is Sly asking about my night?

I blink.

Could it be —?

No.

The world couldn't have ended without my knowledge.

"What's wrong?" Sly looked confused.

"Nothing." I force a smile, "my night was great, thanks for asking."

My night was far from great. It was restless. I had a difficult time luring myself to sleep.

"I can see." He nods, "mine wasn't all that great. I was restless. Had a lot on my mind." He said conversationally.

"Are you talking to me?" I walk to the chair I normally sit on, and sat on it to prevent my legs from giving out in shock.

I thought I've gotten the greatest shock of my life when I kissed Thor, but that can't be compared to the shock I feel right now. I'm beyond shocked, dumbfounded, really.

"Who else am I speaking with? I don't see anyone else around."

"It's it's just — I've never — you've never. We've never." I facepalm.

How can I be this way? Why can't I form a coherent sentence? It's as if my words are stuck in my throat.

"I know I've not been a good husband." He placed both hands in front of him.

Oh, yeah.

I wanted to say, but I bite my tongue to prevent myself from saying anything that might cause him to cease his words.

"I want —"

"Breakfast is ready! Your steaming hot pancake is making an appearance." Marli shouts as she placed a plate of pancakes on the table.

She winked at me as if she did me a favour by barging in at the worst moment ever.

"I made it just like you love it." She giggled to herself.

I felt like bashing her head on the plate of pancakes, but I resisted the urge to do so. The pancakes are innocent, they shouldn't be involved in things like this.
