Chapter 10 - Focus

A smile crossed his lips and he was just simply breathtaking where he sat, he wore a white shirt that hugged his body perfectly, showing those chest lines of his, and his arms rested on the iron table, showing those ripped lean muscles. Holy cow his skin was so smooth and fair, not even a mark, perfect as his face. My orbs fell back to him and I just seem to lose myself again.

"Ahem!"

My head snapped to the teacher. "Do take your seat" and the rest of the class giggled at her remark.

I blushed in embarrassment, ducking my head and leisurely walking to the seat beside him. I placed my books on the table and slid into my seat like a slow snail. Playing with my fingers on the table before cautiously turning my head to face him, resting my chin on my shoulder.

His gaze remained on me and a small smile on his lips, it was almost as if he took interest in watching me.

"Emma Adams" his baritone voice rolled off, I rubbed my knees together trying to ease the ache I felt down there… Why does his voice sound so sweet?

"H-How do you know my name?"

His smile broadened. "Mrs. Kate called you that, that's your name isn't it?"

I'm so stupid! "Y-Yes… my n-name" I muttered, get a hold of yourself, Emma! "Yours?"

He stood upright. "Dace" he set his books properly before his hazel eyes fell on me again. "...Devereaux" he intoned like he was expecting a reaction from me but I just stared at him blinking.

"Cool name"

"Hmm" he tilts his head to the side, I noticed how his dark eyelashes were long from this angle and also in slight curls, they were so beautiful. "Not from around here, huh?"

I shook my head, sluggishly arranging my books. "Why, is there something about your name?"

His lips pursed upwards in a wide smile. "Nothing of interest" he slid it off.

"Hmm" I just nod my head.

"Alright your textbook, notebook and your equipment in place" our teacher announced, getting to explain the practical. I couldn't help it, I whirled my head watching as he opened his textbook, completely forgetting about mine, just watching him was mesmerizing, like a favorite movie playing before you, wanting to capture every view and action with your eyes.

"Not from around here, then where?" His eyes fell on me again and my heartbeat quickened. "The City?"

"F-Far from here…" I said as my lips parted watching his hazel eyes from this angle, with the light coming in, the highlight of his eyes was absorbing. "Washington"

"Washington?" he mouths, already mixing his chemicals. This was a two-man team, so only one of us could mix them, I just watched as he did everything without any difficulty.

"Far from home, why?" He wrote in his notebook and his handwriting was so beautiful. I noticed a cream brown and white woven bracelet he wore on his left wrist, two, the other black but had a small round symbol, with crooked lines within the circle, looking like a tree branch. Here I was admiring everything about him without having a flick of what Mrs. Kate was talking about.

"Personal reasons so I had to… to move" I pushed my glasses more to the bridge of my nose.

His hazel eyes pinned me once again and I found myself saying something I shouldn't, I did say it was personal so why was I speaking? "My mom's job is very demanding and I… I had to move h-here"

"With your aunt?"

"Yes my aunt like I said yesterday" I murmured the last part under my breath. Our last encounter flashed through my head again, like a replay.

"Your dad?"

"N-Not in the picture" I said hoping to brush that off. He nods in understanding. How can someone who didn't know a flick about you understand you so well?

"A-About yesterday, for the umbrella, t-thank you"

He smiled softly, with a blink, those eyelashes moving. "You're much welcome, Emma"

My name rolling off his tongue sent a spark to my body, I rubbed my neck hoping to calm the feeling down and close my eyes but it only just washed upon me more. I flick my eyes open and his ardent gaze remained on me making my toes curl inside my shoes.

"You got home wet because of me" I whispered which was stupid of me because I knew he wouldn't hear me, I was hoping he would say I should repeat myself.

"Like I said… I was already wet" he says as his eyes narrowed as if awaiting my reaction and I only just licked my lips in response, I noticed how the black dot in his eyes dilated again, highlighting the color within. And then it finally dawned on me that he heard me.

"Alright for the 5th step, do it carefully this time, I don't want any of you blowing up your faces with smoke, this ain't Harry potter" Mrs. Kate's strict voice came through followed by a round of giggles from the rest of the company, snapping me out of my delusion with a jolt.

"Please tell me, you caught what she said until now," I said, cautious not to meet his eyes again, scared I might get lost in them again or stare at that handsome face of his nonstop.

"On a scale from 1 to 10, I say 30 for having me as your partner"

"30?" My face was forced to face him back and he was back to mixing the chemicals, My mouth dropped, in all this he was still attentive?

"W-Wow! With you, as my partner, I'm guessing an A in my chemistry"

He chuckled, shaking his head. I smiled because his laugh sent butterflies in my stomach.

"Here, write these samples or else Mrs. Kate will think I'm the only one doing the work which I don't mind at all"

"S-Sure, yeah you're right, sorry for slacking"

"You're not," he said amused, sliding his notebook to me. I took it but his hand was off it quickly, almost like he didn't want our hands to touch at that brief action, I frowned slightly.
