Chapter 20 - Words

I quickly looked away feeling a sting in my chest which was stupid of me. What do you expect Emma? That a drop-dead hot guy like this was single? Keep DREAMING! He totally has a girlfriend, maybe she doesn't go to school here.

Finally, his 'Angel' stopped calling and the car fell into a hot silence again luckily I recognized the block we turned in now, we were almost at my house, I couldn't wait to leave.

The car stopped, and foolish enough of me, I remained glued to my seat. My grip tightened on my bag, what exactly was I waiting for? Maybe I should just say thank you and leave.

"Tha-"

"Emma"

We started at the same time, I finally darted my eyes to his and they were soft as they looked at me. I didn't know for how long but we just looked at each other. But they hardened once again.

"Who's Owen to you?"

I frowned, I wasn't expecting that question. "H-He's my friend" I shrugged.

He nodded, his eyes back to the window, he said something under his breath but I didn't hear him, but then the realization struck me.

"Is that why you won't talk to me? Because of Owen?"

He huffed. "Owen Sherman," he said the name with disdain, the last name to be precise.

"So what, you hate him?"

"I'm not a fan of his…" he tapped his fingers on the wheels. "... family name" he said through gritted teeth.

I was lost there but I didn't care. "You're being a jerk," I said before I could stop myself, stunning even me, I just said the first thing that came to my head, I guess I was feeling a sting within me because of that caller, call me stupid I know but I couldn't help it.

His eyes snapped back to me, I couldn't read his look but it seems like he was trying to read mine too.

"O-Owen is my friend" I intoned. "My first friend", we stared at each for what seemed like seconds, I don't know what their FAMILIES were on about but that doesn't give him any right to say such.

"Thanks for the ride" I murmured about reaching for the door but his hand grabbed my arm gently, I faced him and my body stilled because his face was mere inches away from mine, I couldn't resist the heat that flushed to my cheeks. I could feel his hot breath against my face.

He sighed, closing his eyes for a brief second. At that moment I imprinted this current look in my head, his eyes flicked open and they were soft as they looked at me. "I'm sorry" he began in a soft tone, I could see regret in his orbs. "I shouldn't have asked that," his gaze leveled before they fell back to me, I couldn't explain it but the look he gave me right now was quite primal, I noticed as his pupils dilated before my eyes, mixing once again in some sort of color and I just gawked like a deer in headlights.

"I'm protective of you Emma," he said the words with so much intensity that it got my heart slamming loudly in my chest, I could feel the earnestness within his words. Just when I was finally able to see what colors his eyes were becoming he pulled away, leaving me with a gasp.

"You should go," he said in a low tone like he forced himself to speak.

"O-Okay" I whispered, unable to stop my beating heart, I noticed his tight grip against the wheel, his knuckles were turning white, I wanted to say something but I figured that might not be a good idea.

The door opened and I stepped out, watching as he drove off. I tucked some of my hair behind my ear still replaying what happened in the car, his eyes were… they were changing, that cannot be real.

"Emma!"

I whirled to my aunt at the door. "You're back," she said. "Who dropped you? The school bus passed an hour ago, I was worried"

"M-My friend dropped me"

"Oh" she seemed interested, almost like the look my mom would have on when I said 'a friend dropped me'. "Was it Owen?"

I walked to the door. "It was Dace" I walked inside the house. "Devereaux" I whirled to her.

"Devereaux" she faced me. "Dace Devereaux" she snickered but it wasn't a heartfelt one.

"Yes," I folded my arms. "He-"

"Oh my god, Emma are you okay? What happened to your forehead?" She was before me next.

"Oh that… I got hit on the head with a ball, we were just exercising"

"Oh, that must hurt"

"It doesn't anymore" I assured her.

"A ball to the head gotta hurt"

"Yes it really… really hurt, I hate pain" I admitted.

She smiled. "You took that from your mom, she's always screaming just at the prick of a needle" she mused but then her smile fades. "Emma" she began in a serious tone. "I know I don't have the luxury to select your friends for you. That's a privilege that you have and-"

"Vanessa, where are you going with this?"

She sighed heavily. "Emma…" she rubbed my arms. "Stay away from Dace Devereaux, he's bad news,"
