Chapter 35 - Night Travel

Lucas flutters around uselessly, fiddling with the reins of the missing horses.

The reins themselves look to have been snapped, so the panicked horses likely broke free when the lightning bolt struck - protected by the wood and rubber separating them from the strike.

When I pointedly clear my throat, he glances up, making a soft 'ah!' sound and scurries over to help hook our rented horses onto the righted carriage.

A part of me wonders whether he would have ever thought to come and hook up the horses without my intervention.

A bigger part of me suspects I already know that answer.

I shift, moving back a little to give us some space, crossing my arms as he loops the harnesses in place.

The fact that he knows how to do so is the first remotely useful skill he's shown thus far. Lucas throws me a cheeky grin when he catches my eyes watching him. He winks dramatically and straightens up.
