Chapter 1 - I don't

"Aiden Clinton, do you take Monica Jackson as your lawfully wedded wife? Do you promise to be good to her, respect her, honor her, be there for her, in good times and bad, in sickness and in health, in wealth and in poverty, until death do you part?"

"I do," Aiden replied, holding his bride's delicate hands with care as though they were eggs.

"Monica Jackson, do you take Aiden Clinton as your lawfully wedded husband? Do you promise to be good to him, respect him, honor him, be there for him, in good times and bad, in sickness and in health, in wealth and in poverty, until death do you part?"

The bride stayed silent.

Among the guests, Alexa Quinn, the one haughty heiress, scoffed when the priest repeated the same question, causing the guests to murmur to each other. She turned to her good friend Nora and casually stated:

"Your friend doesn't seem too eager to marry her long time lover. Why is that?"

"I'm as shocked as you are. They've been dating for so many years and they were even childhood friends. She was happy to marry him. Even at her bachelorette party, she never stopped singing Aiden's praises."

"Really? It doesn't look like it. Did she perhaps see something that discouraged her?" Alexa thought out loud.

"I doubt she has anything reasonable, except maybe, the rumor that is going around."

Alexa slowly nodded like realization just dawned on her. "But she's been dating him for years. Why today?" she sighed.

Suddenly, the bride raised her veil and uttered.

"I'm sorry, Aiden… I can't marry you."

The hall was thrown into a pin-drop silence until the bride spoke again.

"I'm in love with your brother, Aaron. I'm so sorry, Aiden."

"Wooo…" Alexa exclaimed just as everyone else cried out in alarm at the shocking revelation. Although she already suspected the bride wouldn't marry Aiden, she didn't expect it was because she had fallen in love with his brother!

Said brother Aaron bolted up from his seat in panic and cried out. "Monica, what are you doing? Aiden is your fiance."

"I know!" The bride yelled and what followed were fat tears rolling down her cheeks. "I know that, but I can't take it anymore!" She held her sparkling white princess wedding gown and hurried down the altar. Standing in front of Aaron, she grabbed his hand and started weeping as she professed her love.

"I've always loved you, Aaron. I never wanted to marry him but you, you told me to not break his heart. I thought I could pull it off. But standing on that altar, I realized I couldn't do it anymore. I'm going crazy!"

"What are you saying, Monica? My brother will be heartbroken. I love you too, but I can't be in a relationship with you."

Gasps and murmurs broke out from the guest seat. Although it was understandable why most women would choose Aaron over Aiden, it was unthinkable that even Monica, someone who was there for Aiden for so many years would do this to him.

"Manipulative much, huh?" Alexa sneered.

"What do you mean?" Nora asked.

"I meant that Aaron is a schemer. I can bet with my virginity that he's doing that to garner sympathy and make himself look good."

Nora raised a questioning brow, "Really now?... The very same virginity that scumbag took away before betraying you?" She scoffed and turned to the altar. Nora couldn't perceive bad intentions from Aaron, but on second thought, Alexa is well-versed in deception, so she took Alexa's word for it.

Alexa wondered why the groom hadn't thrown a tantrum or had a meltdown like a normal person would, so she shifted her gaze to the altar.

The groom was standing there with his hands tucked inside his black overcoat. He was staring down at the bride and his brother who were in a tight embrace… Or rather, the bride was hugging his brother, who was standing like a statue.

He had no anger or hatred on his face. Instead, he only had a faint smile on his lips. The smile sent shivers down Alexa's spine. How could a man who was hurt and humiliated so badly still have the heart to put up a smile? Not to mention the smile doesn't look fake at all!

"He's smiling instead of throwing a fit?" Alexa mumbled in wonderment.

"Aiden is always like that," Nora answered.

"What do you mean?"

"You don't know?... Right, sorry, you just came to Sky City today. Well, Aiden is the type of person whom you'd call perfect— No matter whether he was angry or not, he always had a smile on his face. Aiden has never hurt anyone before. In good or bad situations he would smile and let unfair treatments slide."

"How could someone like this exist?" Alexa asked.

"I'm guessing it's because he grew up too sheltered and was spoiled rotten by his grandparents, so he didn't take life too seriously. And now, look, he's still happy for Monica even though she betrayed him," Nora sighed, "If only he wasn't a good-for-nothing, he would have been number one in the country's 'most wanted husband'."

"And why is that? Is his family rich?" Alexa's interest was piqued. Since she just arrived in Sky City from the Mainland, she has no idea who was who and what was what in this city. Thankfully, she had stumbled upon Nora who invited her to this wedding as her plus one.

Now, it seems like she'll be able to achieve her goals more easily. Her eyes lingered on the still-smiling groom.

"Rich is an understatement," Nora shook her head. "The entire family is shitting gold at the moment. Have you heard of the Clintons?"

"No," she shook her head and adjusted on her seat, "tell me more," Alexa's eyes glittered as she sensed a possible solution to her problem.

Nora began to explain. "The Clinton family has three sons and a daughter— Aaron, Aiden, Seth, and Talia. The daughter, Talia, is extremely unreasonable, egoistic and hateful– she detests poor, white, and brown skinned people. In fact, she hates anything that is slightly different from herself – her self importance is second to none.

"But if you think she's the worst, then you need to check out the rest of the family members."

"She must have grown up without love." Otherwise, what could possibly be the reason for such bitterness? Alexa thought.

Nora disagreed. "Far from it. As the only daughter, she was pampered to a fault. The only good one in the family is Aiden, but he's a good-for-nothing who has no skills to run a business or do anything tangible with his life. Although he's 35 this year, he barely graduated from the university with a pass, and that was three years ago."

"I see," Alexa commented.

"Many believe that the genius Aaron will become the next CEO of Clinton Group. But some believe that their grandfather will pass the company to Aiden even though he wasn't the right person for the position." Nora paused and then continued.

"I'm sure that Aaron felt the pressure which was why he proved his worth by leading the company into buying Mobi Corps and turning it into a subsidiary of Clinton Group in Mainland. With the company expanding across the country under his care, it's no wonder— "

Alexa couldn't hear anything else as a buzzing sound rang in her brain when she heard the name, "Mobi Corps."

That was her father's company!

So, Aaron was the devil who aided Lucian to ruin her life!
