Chapter 40 - Chapter 40

"Nico... Nicolai..." a soft whisper was heard.. he felt a hand touch his cheeks gently. "Nicolai, wake up... what's wrong with him? Did he get bit by something," a familiar voice said in worry.

Nicolai blinked awake.

"Oh thank god," Raven pulled him up and handed him a glass of water.

"What happened...."

"You were out.. God knows..." Raven gently wiped the sweat away.

"Mum... where is she..." Nicolai frantically glanced around. But only the familiar forest stared back at him. He realized that he was back to reality. The ghost of his mother was gone. Tears pooled I his eyes. he vigorously wiped them away. 'it was all just a dream.. who am I kidding...'

"Nico," Avery threw himself into his embrace. "Are you really okay? Do you feel dizzy or woozy? First time is always hard. I fainted too but I also puked. You are not having that much of an adverse reaction. Or do you feel like puking? Oh my god, we need a bucket."

"I'm good," he sat up, hugging the young vampire slightly. "I had a vivid dream. That's all," he mumbled.

Avery looked at him excitedly. "what did you see? Did you witness a new spell? Ooh teach me. I will teach you what I know of,"

Nicolai just shook his head, confusedly. "w-what do you mean... I... I saw my mother's ghost..."

"Mother?! she's a witch?! Oh my god, that's awesome," Avery hoped around him. "Tell me everything. What spell did you just witness? Did you remember the chant? Write down any inscription you saw."

Nico blinked at him. "I don't understand. I just saw her dancing... what spell.. did that spell give me that dream? Shit... that's a potent spell."

"What spell?"

"Your spell.. I saw my mum's ghost. She didn't remember anything but... but I saw her..... I'm... I'm so happy," Nicolai laughed out loud. "Thank you... thank you," he hugged a very tightly.

"Nico... that's not how it works...." Avery awkwardly patted his back.

"Huh?"

"That's not how the spell works... the spell I taught you will only show you the past of your ancestors. We just observe their actions and learn the spells. You don't usually see ghosts... you.. you must have seen something else....."

Nicolai shook his head. "I saw my mum.. I saw her. she was dancing and singing.. and... I saw her. She was pretty,"

Avery calmed down a bit. "Tell me more, what else happened?"

"I was at my house, the old castle in the arctic tribe. It was brand new... and I saw my young mother ice skating..."

"Ice... skating?"

"Is something wrong?" Nico looked at him. Avery had a strange look on his face.

"No no go on. What else happened?"

"I talked to her ghost.. She did not recognize me or my father... she did not remember. I tried my best to help her out but..."

"Wait... you saw ice here in the arctic valley?"

Nicolai did not understand why he was asking so many questions, but he indulged in him. "yes the way it was thousands of years ago. Even the house I was staying in was the same. Right by the back yard, I saw my mother,"

Avery just looked at him with a complicated look on his face.

"What is it?"

Nicolai looked around at everyone else... they all looked at him weirdly.

"Elder... the spell I taught you. did you say it out loud correctly?"

"yes {' exaudi quaeso preces meas, ad me oraculi mei.'} right?,"

"Right right…" Avery started to prance around. "I have heard that some spells work differently when your power is different. You see, for me, it works uniquely. I can see the past of my ancestors when they are casting spells. I just watch them and learn… I can't see their face clearly or talk to them… and I can't see their grimoire. It's like a fog hides my vision. I can't see any of those,"

Nicolai stood up and patted the mud off his back. "Okay…. I think we've had enough witch talk for today,"

"no no," Avery grabbed his hand. "we are not done. You said you saw your mother. did you talk to her?"

"Yes I did. She called me a peeping tom."

Nicolai was more than skeptical now. he did not want to believe that any of these stories are true. He did not have a witch's powers in him, so it was impossible for him to cast a spell. So obviously it did not work.

'All I had was a dream. Just a dream, nothing else.' He touched his heated forehead. 'ah that explains it,'

"Avery it's nothing.. just calm down. I think I have a fever and I have a headache. Nothing more,"
