Chapter 18 - The Mom

"What happened? Lay her down here" her voice sent shivers down my spine, it sounded so melodies and calm, it was smooching to hear, I almost didn't feel my ache anymore.

"A ball to the head" Dace gently lay me down on the bed and I found myself still clinging to his shirt. I heard him chuckle.

"You have to let me go if you wanna get treated" he teased but I don't know why I was stubborn not to, I just don't want to part from him yet.

"Ahem! Dace honey you can stay back" her voice was in amusement.

I froze, forgetting for a split second his mom was there, just great! I wish the ground could just swallow me right now, but that was highly impossible.

Dace settled down on the bed beside me, and his mom worked her way to apply something to my head. She was careful and I almost didn't know when she plastered it.

"Sit her up"

Dace helped me up, ever so gently, I don't think I used my power, it was all him. "She can't see without her glasses if you want to check for concussion"

"Oh"

I heard the door open. "Um, is Emma here? I brought her glasses"

"Thank you"

I heard the footsteps retreat. "Here" I took them before putting them on, I noticed a small crack on the frame.

"Emma, are you still in pain, does your head still hurt?"

My eyes darted to the woman with such a melodious voice and I froze. Beauty was an understatement, was it just me, or were all Devereaux's like models? Was she really Dace's mom? She had raven hair in waves let down to her waist, perfectly and her skin was just so creamy and her face young like she hadn't aged one bit, she looked like she was in her early 30s or something, it was hard to believe that this was a mom.

She had a style to her look also, I would take it all in if it wasn't for the lab coat covering the vintage shirt she wore tucked in her trousers. Her eyes were a set of light hazel's, I knew where Dace took his eyes from, they were so identical to his.

A faint smile found her red lips. "Emma?"

I jolted back to reality, I must have been gawking like a fool. "S-Sorry you're just so beautiful"

"Thank you, Emma," she said sweetly, and I found myself wanting to sleep at the sound of her loving voice.

My body tensed when I felt Dace's hand at the small of my back. "Do you have a headache?"

"N-No I'm fine," I said in a whisper but he seemed to always hear me.

"Here take this" she gave me some pills and a glass of water. I took them. I HATED pills, but it seems I have no choice. I swallowed and quickly chugged the water to get rid of the bitter taste.

"Let her rest for a while, okay," she said, sharing a look with Dace, my head must still be spinning but it seems like they were speaking with their eyes? Her eyes darted to me, and with a small smile, she retreated, her heels clicking as she did.

I wiped my mouth, with the back of my hand. "So your mom is…" I trailed.

"No, she just volunteered, she does that a lot"

I nod because I knew there was no way she would work, someone like her should be in a penthouse or anything, seeing her here was just off? I see why everyone seems to be wary of them in terms of looks. It was nice of Dace's mom to volunteer as a nurse in the infirmary.

"That's nice of her," I said.

"Although I convinced her not to but she never listens"

"Why?"

"Her…" he paused like he was searching for the right word to use. "status… work, yes work"

"Sounds like she doesn't have a lot of free time and yet she…"

"Yes," a small smile found his lips.

There was silence suddenly and it almost got awkward but I broke it before it could. "T-Thanks for bringing me here"

"You're welcome, Emma"

I licked my lips at his response and his gaze fell on them instantly and then my body stilled, he was immobile just as I was, his gaze back to my face, he leaned down but I didn't move, for a moment there I thought he would kiss me.

"You should stay here and rest" He ordered.

"Only if you stay" I muttered, don't say that Emma! He can't miss class because of you!

"I will stay"

I felt my heart flutter at his words. "But I have to shower and change, I stink"

"You smell so good," I said leaning closer to him, Instantly realizing what I said, I blushed.

"S-Sorry I mean um…" I bit my lips.

I heard him snicker.

"It's not funny" I murmured with a blush.

"You look cute when you blush, it makes your freckles come out more," he teased in dashing amusement. I noticed as his eyes lightened more when he said that. Maybe I should do more study because this always took my breath away, everything with Dace was real, too real, I don't know why but it scared me because my life has always been a dream until now.
